ARCOLA THEATRE PROVIDES FUEL CELL POWER
AND LOW ENERGY LIGHTING AT LATITUDE FESTIVAL

London’s Arcola Theatre, renowned for having the world’s first fuel cell powered studio, has taken a brave new step in delivering low energy lighting and hydrogen fuel cell power for this year’s Latitude Festival.

Working with regular partners White Light, Selecon, ETC and PixelRange, Arcola Theatre provided lighting for the entire Theatre Arena using a mixture of LED and low power tungsten technologies; cutting power consumption by over 70%.

A 5kW Gencore fuel cell, supplied by London Hydrogen Partnership in association with Logan Energy, powered the entire lighting rig, with hydrogen provided by BOC. The fuel cell operates almost silently producing nothing but electricity and clean water.

Arcola have enjoyed great success in delivering low power lighting in their own studios, but Latitude presented new challenges – not least that the theatre tent was not blacked-out so the lighting needed to compete with, or rather complement, daylight.

The fuel cell and low energy lighting add to organiser Festival Republic’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the entire event, including solar showers and reusable cups. This project is part of Arcola Theatre’s extensive range of sustainability activities, collectively referred to as Arcola Energy.

Arcola’s Executive Director Dr Ben Todd said:

“Latitude is a great opportunity to push the boundaries of fuel cell and low energy lighting technologies in a high pressure daylight environment. By powering the Theatre Arena we demonstrated these technologies, at close quarters, to 20 leading theatre companies and 25,000 festival-goers. We look forward to being part of many more green events”.

Arcola at Latitude Festival

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

17th July – 20th July 2008
Starting time: Thursday 9pm/Friday 2pm Arcola Theatre will be presenting three plays in the Theatre Tent at this year’s Latitude Festival in Suffolk. A brilliant hybrid of music, comedy, cabaret, literature and poetry, this year’s line up includes Franz Ferdinand, Sigur Ros, Interpol, Ross Noble, Omid Djalili, Phill Jupitus and Sadlers Wells.

Arcola Theatre and Miniaturists are joining forces to present:

Match Play by Chris Campbell from a short story by Frederic Blanchette
Time Spent on Trains by Elizabeth Kuti
Death of the Small Independent Retailer by Glyn Cannon

Directed by Hannah Eidinow, Curated by Glyn Cannon, Produced by Flavia Fraser-Cannon, Designed by Lorna Richie, Cast: Alex Blake, Alex Constantine, Laura-Kate Gordon, Trudi Jackson, Simon Scardifield

Arcola are also leading the greening the Theatre Tent, installing low-energy lighting in partnership with White Light Ltd and a 5kW hydrogen fuel cell to power the productions in collaboration with the London Hydrogen Partnership.

DEATH OF THE SMALL INDEPENDENT RETAILER by Glyn Cannon
A very ordinary bloke loses his temper for a fleeting moment and becomes a bull in a bookshop. Causing a potentially fatal accident, he is forced to face up to the consequences. Or maybe not.

MATCH PLAY by Chris Campbell from a short story by Frederic Blanchette
Dinah wishes Simon had explained the rules of the game properly before taking her to see the mighty Peter Rockwell in a crucial match of some sort. When Dinah breaks with sacred tradition, Simon wishes he had explained them as well.

TIME SPENT ON TRAINS by Elizabeth Kuti
Looking back, Peter reminisces about long train journeys between hospital appointments with his mother, Jenny. All Peter was interested in then was crisps and tyrannosauruses, while his mother just wanted him to say anything out loud at all…

Miniaturists is a regular writer-led event dedicated to producing short but perfectly formed plays based at Arcola. Every show presents five plays from an array of writers, new and established. Each piece is no longer than 20mins and the dizzying mix makes every event as variable and unpredictable as life itself.

Jigsaw Falling Into Place: Radiohead concerts LED-lit

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Radiohead’s Tour may well be using the first exclusively LED tour-lighting system.

From Radiohead’s official website:

Andi Watson, the lighting and visuals designer for Radiohead since their club days, has a reputation for innovation and attention to detail.  It was his creative genius and strong support of the concept that brought him to suggest going further and use LED.  Back to a direct power demand system but using much less power at 100%.

During this festival, Arcola theatre will present one event:

Driving the Eco-cultural Frontier: A discussion about Arts and Sustainability.

Sustainability is a global issue and requires both a change of practices (across all sectors) and a change of mentality in the public domain. The Arts have historically been a driving force for change but thus far have been slow to address the issues involved in sustainability. What role could the arts play in facing one of the most important challenges of the 21st century? Does a synergy exist between theatre and the need to change people’s behaviour in the face of climate change? How can we combine the arts and sustainability?
A seminar with the leaders, engineers, designers, directors and producers of Arcola’s ground breaking eco-cultural projects including fuel cell installation, low energy theatre lighting and sustainable theatre productions.

6pm to 8pm: Seminar

8pm to 10pm: Eco-Entertainment: live music and eco bar.

DATE: 15th June
TIME: 6pm
ENTRY FEE: none
