The Incubator is the part of the project that people most struggle to understand, yet it is the heart of the concept. Perhaps the best analogy is that of Arcola's theatre programme: the incubator is expressly designed to be a parallel strand.

For those unfamiliar with theatre management, Arcola posesses:

  1. An artistic director responsible for developing plays to be produced in-house and selecting which visiting company shows to accept.
  2. An in-house team to produce in-house shows and support visiting companies.
  3. Multiple modes of interaction available to visiting companies, varying between straight hire of the venue by the company (typical), through co-productions (occasional), to a fully supported hiring of the company by the venue (rare).
  4. A youth, community and audience development programme which is fertilised by the professional artistic programme

Thus, by analogy, the Arcola Energy Incubator will have:

  1. A technical director responsible for developing in-house sustainability projects and choosing outside projects for the incubator programme
  2. An in-house team to produce in-house projects and support visiting companies
  3. Multiple modes of interaction available to visiting companies varying from showcasing of products and services at Arcola, through partnership projects, to commisoning of visiting companies to deliver products and services
  4. A youth, community, and public awareness programme fertilised by the incubator programme
