The status of hydrogen energy was enhanced further today with a ground breaking announcement by His Excellency, Mr Alex Noerdin, Governor of South Sumatra at the European Utility Week Expo in Barcelona, that the South Sumatran government has agreed a deal with IMS ECUBES, to provide a comprehensive range of zero-carbon energy infrastructure to underpin the Asian Games in 2018.

The games, the world’s largest sporting event outside of the Olympics, will now benefit from IMS ECUBES expertise in the delivery of these advanced zero-carbon technologies, including:

  • Solar PV energy generation
  • Hydrogen storage and power demand-side management
  • Fuel cell power generation supply-side management
  • Zero emission hydrogen fuel cell mobility

Making the announcement, His Excellency, Mr. Alex Noerdin, Governor of South Sumatra said:

“Despite being a region rich in coal, oil and gas resources, my government has a resolute belief in the need for us to take steps to secure a sustainable, green future. Accordingly, we’ve been searching for many years for different economically feasible solutions to deliver green and affordable power.

“That detailed, painstaking analysis has led us to seek a hydrogen-based solution and to rely on the expertise and capabilities of IMS ECUBES. We are confident that in addition to the grid power and zero emission mobility solutions that IMS ECUBES will deliver for those involved in the Asian Games, there will be ongoing benefits for the residents of South Sumatra as a key legacy of this decision.

Speaking at the announcement, Aleksander Gerbec, IMS ECUBES President said:

“This project involves the deployment of clean energy technologies which are ready and available today, but which require leaders to make strong decisions to deploy at scale. Such leaders will enable the benefits of clean, affordable power and mobility for everybody.”

Speaking at the announcement, Dr Ben Todd IMS ECUBES CTO said:

“This is a significant milestone in the adoption of hydrogen technologies for large-scale power generation and supply, and evidences South Sumatra’s ambition and vision – not just for the Asian Games, but for a longer-term, sustainable future.

“We are confident that this partnership with South Sumatra will lead to hydrogen-based solutions being established within the energy mix globally. It will also demonstrate, given the challenging, sub-2-year timescale for delivery, that hydrogen-based solutions can be deployed at least as quickly as other alternatives.”

Arcola Energy, the UK’s hydrogen energy specialists, have announced that they have now sold or leased 32 of Renault’s Kangoo ZE-H2 electric vans - with fuel cell range extender produced by Symbio FCell, to UK customers. This is now the largest hydrogen vehicle fleet in the UK.

It means that UK fleets are realising the benefits of a hydrogen-fuel transport solution with vehicles boasting a range of 250 miles – twice the previous range of comparable electric vehicles.

In partnership with ITM Power, the energy storage and clean fuel company, Arcola Energy deliver an integrated package of on-site fuel and after-sales support for UK commercial fleets. This provides fleet customers with a one-stop solution for vehicle preparation, registration, insurance, site approvals and staff training. This is in addition to maintenance and engineering support and training and education services, allowing fleet managers to fully realise the benefits of these vehicles.

Dr Ben Todd, Arcola Energy’s Managing Director, noted:

“One of the issues facing transport managers seeking a truly zero-carbon solution for their vehicle fleets has been the restricted range of battery-only electric vehicles. The solution - now available in the UK exclusively from Arcola Energy, means that fleets can operate effectively either from a local base which we can provide with our partners, or via the network of hydrogen refuelling stations which has been established across the country over the past few years and which continues to grow. The hydrogen transport revolution is taking-off.”

Arcola Energy, through its network of suppliers both within the UK and abroad, offers fleet managers a total solution for renewable, zero-carbon transport. It has become the UK ‘one stop shop’ for renewable-energy powered vehicle fleets, being directly involved in all aspects of the transport system, from fuel cells, through electric vehicles to refuelling facilities. The company provides customers with bespoke solutions for specific fleet requirements.

“I would urge fleet managers to consider where in their fleet this vehicle and the forthcoming larger fuel cell electric vehicles might fit"

Arcola Energy is exhibiting at the Utility Week conference, in Barcelona, from 15 - 17 November on stand No 3D48, alongside our key partner ITM Power. The stand is that of IMS ECUBES, Arcola’s international clean energy infrastructure Joint Venture company of which Arcola Energy MD is the CTO.

Arcola Energy is the UK representative for Symbio FCell, a French company based in Paris and Grenoble, specialising in the design and industrialisation of hydrogen fuel cell systems in the 5kW – 300kW power range. Arcola provides sales, deployment and technical support within the UK.

The Renault Kangoo ZE-H2 electric van is now in series production and offers, with the Symbio FCell range extender, a range of more than 250 miles.

ITM power will be exhibiting alongside our key partner, Arcola Energy on the IMS ECUBES stand 3D48. Visitors will be able to see ITM Power’s flexible approach to generating hydrogen for zero emission mobility and the importance of using highly efficient electrolyser stack technology.

ITM Power will be showcasing the 2MW PEM electrolyser stack module which has a response time of 0.2 seconds, converting excess renewable energy into hydrogen gas, which can then be stored and used in a number of applications such as Power-to-Gas energy storage or a clean fuel source for fuel cell electric vehicles.
